My grandpa died two years ago today. My family isn't religious and we've never really marked it. Tonight I put his harmonica on the windowsill, lit a candle (in a jar, on a plate, I read the safety threads here), and just told him about my year, out loud. It felt silly for about thirty seconds and then it didn't.

I don't know what I believe. I'm not sure I need to yet. I just wanted to tell someone it happened.

Nothing about that is silly. You made a place, you showed up, you spoke. That's the whole of it. Welcome.

Sitting with the dying is my job, and I can tell you this is exactly what families most often wish they'd done. You don't need to know what you believe to love someone out loud.

Holding you and your grandpa in prayer tonight, if that's alright with you. The harmonica on the windowsill is perfect.

We remember our dead with a lamp and their favourite things, just as you did. You found a very old path all on your own, beta.

Those thirty seconds of feeling silly are the doorway. You walked through it. He heard you.
